FALL FROM A WINDOW. (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE. July 7. Robert McWhirter who was injured through falling out of an upstairs bedroom window in a country hotel, died at the hospital. FOUND DROWNED. GISBORNE, July 7. The body of William Cochrane, drowned in Motn river a fortnight ago, has been discovered near where the man’s cries were heard on litc night of the fatality. THE AUCKLAND FATALITY. AUCKLAND. July 7. The inquest was held to-day concerning the death of Thomas Rutland. the workman, who fell over ."Oft on Monday, while engaged on a building in Queen street, and died almost immediately. Deceased was on a heavy girder, which was being lifted into position by steam power, when a link in the heavy chain suddenly broke and the falling block from the tackle struck deceased on the head and lie fell on to some logs below, receiving fatal injuries. Expert evidence was to the effect that the metal in (lie steel chain was rendered brittle by the frost of the previous night, and tills probably caused it to break. Tire coroner, after full inqury, found that flic death was accidental, no blame being attachable to anyone. A BROKEN LEG, Mr John Page, physical instructor to the High Schools and Technical School, nad the misfortune the other day while landing from the Roman rings in the gymnasium, to break his leg just above tlie ankle. Mr Page did not fall or slip, and the accident was of such a character that the serious consequences were surprising. Owing to tills unforeseen aci idont it has been found necessary to abandon the High School gymnastic display intended to he given about the rnd Of October. It will be some time before Mr Page is able to resume his duties. A MILL HAND'S DEATH. GRKYMOUTH. July 7. The adjourned inquest into the circumstances attending the death of Peter Ewart, who was killed by a. tramway ■ n-ciiiem at a Raroa sawmill on Tuesday last, was resumed this afternoon. The coroner returned a verdict that deceased met his death by being thrown from a runaway truck, on which he was acting brakesman. RAILWAY PORTER INJURED. Yesterday morning a young man named Janies bonne employed as -a. tablet porter at Waikiwi was injured while some trucks wore being shunted at the Waikiwi siding. Just as a number of trucks wore branching at the intersection on to the side line from the main track. Loane went to stiift the hook on the rear truck to he kept on the main line, with the result that lie wan squeezed between the corner of that truck and the coiner of the first of the trucks branching on to Lie side line. Fortunately lie escaped with minor injuries and in a week or two should in* able to resume duty.
