The lit. Hon. Sir Samuel James Way. Lieut.-Govemor and Chief Justice of South Australia, has - undergone an operation In Sydney, his left arm being amputated at the shoulder. Sir Samuel Way Is in his 6Sth year. Lieutenant Alfred Noakes, a resident of the dominion for the last eight years, and for the previous twenty years in South Africa, died at Christchurch yesterday. He served in the Bechuanaland campaign and South African war. and held the King's and Queen's medals. The London Probate Court has granted Mr 11. B. Irving leave to presume the death of his brother Laurence, who, with his wife,, was drowned by the sinking of the Empress of Ireland. Mr Irving’s estate amounts to about £IOOO. all of which was bequeathed to his wife. The Court gave leave for Mrs Irving's death also to bo presumed. Mr E. S. Whitcombe, railway traffic superintendent for the South island, arrived in Invercargill by the second express last night. Mr Alex. Hamilton, manager of the National Bank at Kiverton. has been promoted to the position of , manager at Oamaru in succession to the late Mr C. McDouall. Mr C. R. S. Barrett, accountant at Invercargill, has been promoted to the position of manager of the Riverton branch. By Mr Barrett’s removal to Riverton Invercargill's musical circle will be deprived of one of its most accomplished members. Mr Barrett has attained considerable nolo as a violinst, both in orchestral and solo work, and it will be extremely difficult to replace him if His now position prevents him from continuing his association with the musical organisations. For some lime Mr Barrett was leading violinist of the Musical Union, and in that capacity his work was always conspicuously artistic. His appearances at local concerts during the jgist week have given the public a fresh appreciation of the quality of Mr Barrett's work, ami the loss of his services as a musician will be widely regretted. Mulligan, of Wyndhnm, hasbeen appointed a deputy-registrar of births, deaths, and marriages. The staff of the Education Board met Inspector and Mrs Hendry in the cookery room at the Technical College on Fridas - , for the purpose of wishing them good-bye. Mr A. Bell, secretary of tire Board.' occupied the chair. and Mr McCuw. on behalf of th e staff, presented Mrs Hendry with a handsome rug, and Inspector Hendry with a solid leather suitcase and a pipe. In doing so he extolled Inspector Hendry as an official and as a friend. His remarks wore supplemented by Messrs A. Bell and AA ylio (Chief Inspector! and Dr Hansen, principal of the Technical College. In the course of his reply Inspector Hendry said that he felt Uiat the function was the climax of the farewells he had received. for he felt the leave-taking very keenly. A telegram was received from Mr .Inn. Neil, former secretary of the Board, joining with the staff in wishing Mr and Mrs Hendry an affectionate farewell. A Melbourne cable states that the Victorian TTniversity has appointed Messrs Marshall Hall and Ormond to the Professorship of Music.
