Speaking to a reporter today Mr John Smith, acting-mayor, said he regarded it as a gigantic steal —another attempt by the Government to steal the tramways from the people. It was sheer daylight robbery and a move that was clearly made to force tramway authorities to sell out to the Government at a sacrifice. The adoption of the regulations would mean an extra expenditure of £50,000 to Wellington corporation. He proposed to call a public Indignation meeting. DUNEDIN. July 12. The proposed tramway regulations are genere.lly condemned in Dunedin. If thew are enforced the carrying capacity of the city cars would be reduced by 50 per cent., and the revenue would suffer severely. The Hill tram companies are also opposed to the regulations.
