£3,600 FOR BOAD WOBES. LUCKY iVAIKAIA. As (lie result of a conference between Crs. Robertson and Fleming, representing" the Southland County Council, and aMr T. MaeGibbon, representing the Otago School Commissioners, a compromise has been arrived at between the two bodies with regard to the for mer's claim for thirds and fourths.. Th matter has been In dispute for soin< years. The Commissioners were supported by the Department in rejecting the claim of Hi,ooo made by the Conn cil at the instance of Cr. Robertson, the Department pointing out that the Government had spent 15,300 in subsidies for roads in the area affected, and the Commissioners stating Unit they had also contributed £3OOO in road works in the same district. Legal proceeding; were pending but the conference agreed upon tilo stun of fS.tiOt) in settlement of all claims. The money will be paid over, subject to the approval of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, as the works progress, and will be spent for the benefit of the tenants of the educational reserves in Southland. It is expected that the agreement arrived at will be confirmed by both the Council and the School Commissioners. Waikaia riding will benefit to the greatest extent from the money thus made available, and its member, Cr. C. Robertson, lias the satisfaction of knowing that his unremitting efforts to have the Council’s claim recognised have at last been successful.
