Received 3rd, 10.39 p.n>.The Aliens Restriction Bill was read a second time without a division. After Sir C. Dilke's amendment had been defeated votes to 59 Mr Atherley Cones . intended to move the rejection ; el i.ho i iIL but recognising the unpopularity . of this -step the Opposition announced that they would be content to wake amendments in committee. Sir C. Dilke’s amendment declared that the evils of low-priced alien labour would be best met by li’gislation preventing sweating. Mr Chamberlain supported the bill as the fii'st step towards a limitation of the system of unrestricted free imports.
