Important Sale of Clyde dale Horses

HECOHD PRICES,

Yesterday one of the most important sales of draught horses that has ever been held in Southland was conducted by the N.M. and A. Co. at Messrs Ewall Bros.’ farm, Idavalo, Drummonds The day being line there was a largo gathering of farmers and others, and the sale was a particularly . 1 risk one, record prices being obtained for wares. Tho animals offered have earned distinction in the show rings of this province, and tho quality of the different lots elicited the most favourable criticism. The sale was unreserved, and was only held on account of a, dissolution of partnership, - Mr David Ewan, who has been associated with his brother on the farm, going to Scotland. The range of prices for tlio draught stock was as follows ; Apt'rima F.ancy, 3yrs, by Shepherd Lad, dam by King of the Clans, 220 guineas. This fine mare fell to the bid of Mr W. Patrick, Taieri, the crowd applauding the purchaser. Rosy O'Grady, a full sister, 2yrs, was started at 60 guineas, ana quickly ran to 100 guineas, going to the same purchaser. Kate, 2yrs, sire Macfarlame, dam Gip, 41 guineas, Mr A. Coster, Aparima ; Bess, 4yrs, sire Gallant Lad, dam Gip, 42 guineas, Mr Lumsden ; Jess, 4yrs, sire Macarthur, dam Gip, 62 ('guineas, Mr Shearer, Drummond ;> Duchess, ag.ed, sire Sir Colin Prince, dam Glencoe mare, 11 guineas, Mr 11. Jenks, Springbank, Waianiwu ; Blossom, sire Macarthur, dam Flower, 51 guineas, Messrs Kennedy Bros., Drummond colt foal, sire Garthland, dam Blossom, 41 guineas, same buyers., colt foal, sire Garthland, dam Duchess, 44 guineas, Mr W. Patrick, Taieri; Flower, sire Shepherd Lad, dam Blossom, 66 guineas, Mr D. T; Dickie ; filly foal, sire Garthland, dam Flower, 40 guineas, Mr J. T. Cox, Harringtons’; colt foal, sire Garthland, dam Gip, 22J guineas. This was the result of the sale of the pedigree stock, and* the prices paid go ’.if shov| the excellence of the stud, and it is a matter for regret that such a fine lot of mares was dispersed. It will be seen that thought Mr Patrick secured the best, the majority will not leave the province. A feature of the sale was the prices for Garthland’s foals, three averaging 42 guineas .each. These were well-grown and of fine stamp, and a grand recommendation for the full brother to the illustrious Hiawatha, the champion horse of Scotland. The maros are all in foal to Garthland, and the Messrs Ewan made no mistake in importing, this fine horse. I'o further illustrate the success of tho sale, eigtit mares brought 663 guineas, or an average- of 84 guineas, whilst their foals brought 125 guineas

The hacks and harness horses also brought good prices—a mare sold at 19 guineas and gelding 20 guineas. Sheep were in demand, a nice line of 4 and fltooth wethers bringing 20s and the ewes 2>s 3d. Cows brought from £5 10s to t'7, and a polled Angus bull £‘i 7s Cd. \ sumptuous luncheon was provided, and he auctioneers provided drags to convey isitors to and fro between Winton and •he homestead. During the afternoon Gnrthland wa« paraded and generally ad- 1 mired. This handsome horse appears in excellent fettle.
