T. M. Slattery, M.L.C., was charged with fraudulently converting to his own use £6,127, the property of Mrs Scanlon. The complainant, who inherited a large share of James Tyson's property, gave evidence that Slattery acted, under a power of attorney, as her property manager, including the collecting of rents, which he had to pay into the bank. Altogether £122,000, her property, .passed through his hands. Though frequently asked to do so Slattery failed to render proper accounts. He wrote her several letters to England, wherein he informed her that he. was unable to meet hi;s engagements, and asking her to meet him in Adelaide and to do nothing till she received a personal explanation, which would show that he had done his best ; that he had ndt wilfully robbed her of a farthing. He had lieen tile victim of circumstances and had gone through the tortures o'f purgatory. Hf she proceeded against him there was nothing but gaol and ruin ahead ; if she would be lenient and stop the prosecution he would settle everything satisfactorily! .and she would probably save him from ruin and destruction. The hearing was adjourned.
