A Durban paper of January Ist states that the canoo Tilikum had arrived safely from Australia. Wright Armstrong*, the minor who was crushed to death by a fail of the roof while removing timbers in the> Brunner mine, last week, was a native of Tonhill, Dumbartonshire. He was 38 years' old, and leaves four young, children. Armstrong appears to have been a general favourite about the mine. Commercial men report that there is quite a slump in tousiness in Wellington at present (_ays tho New Zealand Times.) January is usually a quiet month, but the reaction after a very busy Christmas is particularly noticeablo this year. The head of one large wholesale house states that for tho post three weeks half his present stall could easily have coped with the business dono. By the beginning- of next month, however, business is expected to have recovered. An excellent sign at present is that all oversea steamers are receiving full cargoes.
