Harriers
Yesterday afternoon the Invercargill HHrriers held a handicap race of between loiiv £md five miles. The course was from the Hospital to the Waihopai, ' through Jjenijel "to 1011pm Road, along Gala street and back to the Hospital, the going 1 in places being very heavy. Fifteen started, the limit man having a handicap of 3J minutes, so that tbo back markers had a stiff task set them; nevertheless, they were all well up jit the finish. Going through Lennel they caught the field, and from there a sjood race ensued, the first five finishing in a bun.en. .Wm. Stead was the lirst to break the tape, with Spear, J. Peters, Murphy and Paape following in that order. The winner had a handicap of 70 seconds, his actual' time for the distance being 21 minutes 32 seconds. Peters (scratch) did the fastest time, namely, 20 minutes 23 seconds, which is 38 w^ conds faster thnn that record for the intei'pro^infial race with Otago over tnp same course last June- Although suflGi" ing from the effects of a cold, Peters ran a game race, and his performance is a. highly creditable one.
