Hefore Judge Conoily the Truant Orticer appealed against the. decision of justices of the peace k a case in which the defendant pleaded guilty to a breach of the School Attendance Act in not sending his boy to school and in which the justices dismissed the case on the ground that the offence was a trivial one. Hia Honour said the facts seemed to be admitted. Defendant, pleaded guilty and tho case was dismissed by the justices under section 87 of the Justices of Peace Act, 911 the. ground that tho ofTence was trivial. They should not have have accepted the plea of "guilty" but should have heard the case. Counsel for appellant, said that the case v-as taken from a number similarly decided on the same day. His Honour allowed tho appeal, and ordered tho case to go back to the justices, expressing the opinion that a minimum penalty snould be inflicted. Mr John Kirn?, Registrar of " Electors for Auckland, has resigned owing to tho worry of the last. 18 months. WELLINGTON , Aug. 5. The Council of the Northern BowlingAssociation has accepted an invitation to hold the noxt tournament in Auckland.. At an inquest on Hugh Vallanco a verdict was returned that death was due to taking prussic acid while temporarily depressed. UHRISTOHUftCH, Aug. 5. A lad was taken to the hospital yesterday suffering from a severe cut in the groin. .As his condition was serious to-day his depositions were taken. He stated that he had boon washing himself and his mother askx?d him to go on an errand. An argument ensued, and the boy toU! his mother to " shut up." She then threw a carving knife at him, inflicting- the injuries. His condition was improved this morning. DUNETHN, Aug. 5. ' Tho Chief Justice reserved decision in the i-asp in which the late licensee of tho Hotel ilelropole, St. Clair, sought an order from the Court to compel the Caversham Licensing Committee to grant him a license, his contention being th:\t the committee had refused the license thinking that .because it was endorsed they had no powef t,o grant it,
