WELLINGTON, Feb. 4
John Joseph Murphy was convicted of indecent assault on a child, and was sentenced to three years' hard labour. Chas. Langstone and Henry Stuart pleaded
"Not Guilty" to conspiring to defraud Adam Sargent of £150 by Inducing him to purchaso an interest in a bogu3 " plug " brick invention. The case was not concluded when tho Court rose.
AUCKLAND, Feb! 4
Sixteen prisoners, remanded from tho lower courts for sentence, wero dealt with to-day. John Thomas Corkin, for forgery at New. Plymouth, got three years ; Francis Norman Johnston, aged 19, a returned trooper, for stealing £27 from his uncle at Stratford, got twelve months.
Judge Conolly this morning commented upon the youth of the prisoners who came before him for sentence. Out of sixteen only two were over 30 yeara of age ; the majority were between 17 and 29. The chief causes, his Honour said, appeared to be drimc and gambling.
TIMARU, Feb. 4
William Woodhouse, for suborning a witness to save himself from trial for indecent assault waa sentenced to two years' imprisonment.
