In Clutha Again

DUNEDIN. Jan. 29
At Balclutha to-day John Gibbon MacDonnell, convicted of unlawfully Belling alcoholic liquor, was sentenced to three month's imprisonment. The defendant gave evidence on his own behalf and said the liquor had been given him by his mother-in-law. He admitted having been previously fined £80, and on another charge, of being sent to"-gaol for ten days. Mr Hanlon, who appeared for accused, asked that his objection be noted that evidence as to previous convictions had been improperly admitted.
Alexander Cowie, brewer. Caversham, was charged with sending a barrel of beor to Owaka without having, on it dis> tinctly written or printed a statement that it contained liquor. Mr Cruickshantos, S.M., was at * first inclined to agree with counsel that the payment of storage duty was sufficient, but after inspection decided against him.' As defendant evidently thought he was acting in accordance with the regulations his^Worship dismissed the information.
