Every tap releases and drops the mould of a letter, a p\uictuatiou mark or a space. When enough of the moulds of lctterß, dots and dashes have been dropped to form a line, a jet of molten metal is squirted in and a line of typo is the result^ The operator taps away without intermission, the machine goes on at its work, lanking up lines of moulds, pouring metal in them, putting each mould back into its own bin and trimming the rough edges of the line of typo and putting it in its place in the growing column. It is this intelligent compound of wheels and levers which renders possible standard books well printed, and bound in oloth at sixpence per volume with which Thomson and Beattie are astonishing the reading public.
