WOOL SELLING BETTER THE OPENING OF NEW GUINEA : PERTINENT QUERY EARLY APPLICATION FOR IMPERIAL COMMISSIONS NECESSARY THE CARLTON HUSBAND MURDER SYDNEY, Nov. 14. The wool sales in all the colonies show spirited competition and a hardening tendency for better classes. BRISBANE, Nov. 14. In reference to Burns, Philps and Co's application for land in New Guinea on behalf of the Hall Sound Co., correspondence shows that the Hon. G. R. Le Hunte, Administrator of New Guinea, stated that the directors would not proceed further in the matter unless assured there would not be any opposition from the Australian governments. He was very sorry if this large bona fide attempt to develop the resources of the possession by an Australian Company should fail owing to discouragement in official quarters. Replying to enquiries from the Victorian Premier on the subject, the Chief Secretary of Queensland wrote : " Are no beginnings to be made in development except those which have no other recommendation than that they are so small as to contribute only in an unappreciable degree to the prospect j of a possession becoming self-sustain-ing 1 It appears to me that uniform opposition to such a proposal will leave no alternative prospect in regard to the maintenance of the possession beyond the continuance of the burden now borne by New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, which would never have been taken up except in anticipation that relief would come when a certain time was allowed for the establishment of revenue-prod ucing interests in the territory." MELBOURNE, Nov. 14. Mr Chamberlain has cabled that sufficient officers for the regular forces have been obtained, and that the granting of direct commissions .will be discontinued. Any offers to the colonies not already filled will lapse on December 31st, and no nomination will be received after. A verdict of manslaughter was returned by a coroner's jury against Mrs Wright, who shot her husband in Carlton. .
