Canterbury A. and P. Show
(By Telegraph.) Christchurch, Nov. 8. The annual exhibition of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association opened this morning. Taken altogether, the show compares favourably with that of any previous year. The sheep show was pronounced by some enthusiasts the finest ever seen south of the Line. It was a grand display, thoroughly representative of. the colony, tho most celebrated flocks from Hawkes Bay to Southland having contributed to it. The cattle were disappointing; there was very little competition, and in some classes a distinct deterioration in quality was noticeable. Tho most prominent feature of the section was an exhibit of Highland cattle imported by Mr G. Rhodes, Timaru, and sent for exhibition only. The draught horses also were far from being up to the general standard of excellence. The entry was small, and though some good animals were brought forward the class as a whole fell far short of the exhibitions of former years. For sheep medals were awarded as follows :—For merino fine combing, C. Ensor ; ewe, Malloch and Lance ; strong combing ram, A. A. McMaster. English Leicester: ram, J. Little ; ewe, J. M. Furze. Border Leicester: ram, Hon. M. Holmes ; ewe, Little Bros. Lincoln : ram, N. and A.L. Co. ; ewe, Marrisand Sutton (Thornbury). Romney March : ram, A. C. Lang ; ewe, J. Reid. Southdown: ewe and ram, J. Deans. Shropshire Down : ram and ewe, C. Lewis. Hampshire Down : ram, A. O’Brien; ewe, M. J. Freidlander. Crossbred : W. Lyttelton. Draught horses: champion, J. Boag’s Middlerigg. Cattle : championship, J. Deans. Pigs : T. Rowe.
