Rifle Match

On Thursday ten members of the Southland Rifle Chib went to the Bluff at the invitation of a team of civilians to try conclusions with them, the conditions being seven shots each at 200, and 300 yards. • As the Bluff men used Snider rifles, and the Club team the Martini-Henry, the latter conceded a handicap of ten points per man. The weather was fine, and on reaching the Port the Cltib men were met by the Bluff team and escorted to Host Hamiltons, where they were entertained at lunch. This over, the teams proceeded to the Bluff Naval’s range (kindly lent for the occasion), and a very keen contest was carried out, resulting in a win for the Club team by 10 points. Mr W. L. Gray captained the Bluff team, and Mr W. Nicol the Club ceam. At the conclusion of the match Mr VV. Smith, on behalf of tho Club, thanked their opponents for a very pleasant day’s entertainment, and hoped a return match at Invercargill would be arranged for an early date. Mr VV. L. Gray having happily replied, cheers were given by the respective teams, with a round for the Navals for the use of the range. Appended are the scores :—
