(Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, March SO. The body of a woman was found on Cheltenham beach, Devonport, to-day having evidently been washed ashore. The remains have not been identified and nothing is yet known as to how the woman came by her death. A suit, McDonald v. Greenway, claim of L 205 for alleged jewellery sales and promissory notes signed. wa3 concluded in the Supreme Court to-day. Mr Justice Conolly characterised the case as a most disgraceful one. He said one side was as bad as the other as far as fleecing young Gresnway was concerned. The jury returned a verdict for the defendant. WELLINGTON, March 29. The grooms on the tramway struck this morning for an advance of wagc3 from L 7 to Li) per month, and all the other hands, except live, struck with them. It appears from the mcv's version that the strike i.s not due to any special or isolated grievance, but is rather the culmination of a long standing dispute. They maintain that extensions of the tramway have made it impossible for the time-table to be kept, and some recent reduction or moditication of pay has caused fresh discontent. Ihe men say that the proprietor of the tramway was frequently communicated with regarding their grievances, but declined to comply with their terms. Mr Hall, on the other hand, says he heard nothing of these grievances until a few days ago, and he was even at that time informed by one of the employes that they were all satisfied at the existing arrangements. At the end of last week the men had an interview with Mr Hall, and the arrangements for a second interview being bungled, the Trades Council and employes met last evening, when a strike was resolved on. No difficulties have been experienced in filling the vacancies, and a twenty minutes service instead of ten minutes ia being run. BLENHEIM, March 30. For sometime past Mr Sutton, a miuiug expert representing a Melbourne syndicate, has been in this district for the purpose of examining the Wakamarina Gorge; claim with the view of developing it with Victorian capital. Ou his first visit a spur wheel unaccountably smashed as steam was put on to work the pumps. A new wheel was obtained and pumpiug resumed on Saturday but on Sunday evening the shaft broke. Foul play was suspected and to-day Alexander Waller, who was in charge of the engiue at the time of the last breakdown, ; was arrested on the information of Mr E. Puraor, and charged with wilfully damaging I the machinery. As rumours are afloat that there are parties hostile to the success of the present company great interest centres in the case.
