INVERCARGILL v. PIRATES. The second match between these clubs came off on the Union Grounds yesterday afternoon, when the Pirates were again the victors, the score being 4 points to nil. Despite the unfavourable nature of the weather, a good many spectators were present— a large proportion being ladies. Treseder kicked off for the Blues (who played two men short for a few minutes), and the Pirates' territory was invaded. The Blues made it pretty warm for their opponents for sometime, but could not manage to score. There was nothing very brilliant in the first spell, and half time was called with no score on either side. The Blues had considerably the best of the game so far, but after the kick off the Pirates wakened up a bit and gave the senior club a lively time of it. J. Tapper crossed the line and scored right behind the posts, but the kick at goal was a failure. Shortly after the kick off at half way, the Pirates again, menaced their opponents' lines, and McMaster, from a good pass by J. Tapper, potted a goal. Although the Blues pressed their opponents heavily for some time, they never got over the line, and a very closely-contested game thus ended in a win for the Blacks. For the losers Treseder was the pick of the forwards, and was ably assisted by Twemlow, Cox, Martin,' and Geo. Watson. Bain, Howell, and T. Watson played well at back. For the winners, Mentiplay played splendidly at forward, and seemed to be always on the ball. Galbraith, Pay, Dalfcon, and Ayling were also prominent, particularly in the second spell. Tapper Bros., McMaster, H. Rodgers, and Ekensteen, at back, played their parts with good judgment. Messrs Murphy and Morrison were the umpires and Mr R. Galbraith acted as referee. There was a good deal of unnecessary talking at times, and it would be well if players would remember that the captain alone is supposed to be heard on such occasions.
