Wednesday, 3rd July. The monthly meeting of the Board was attended by the Chief Commissioner (Mr J. Spence), and Messrs Denniston and Kinross. The following applications for land were granted: — On deferred payment : Henry Ranee, section 76, block 19, New River Hundred; Robert Hitchcock, section 25, block 19,, New River Hundred; On perrtual lease : J. B. Basstian, sections 5, 6, 9, and. 10, block 5, Centre Hill (1463 acres) ; Newton Argyle, section 3, block 10, Wendon : William Richards, section 2, block 15, Longwood; Thomas Bain, section 8, block 12, Oteramika ; A. G. Anderson, section 28, block 19, New River Hundred. To complete purchase: John Lynch, section 629, Hokonui ; John Melvin, section 2, block 5, Feldwick township ; Bella S. Troup, 'section 16, block 10, Tuturau ; Patrick Keady, section 116, block 15, Invercargill Hundred ; Henry Watson, section 10, Pallia Village; C. ,F. Keen notified the Board that he had abandoned section 288, - Taringatura, with all improvements as he was unable to hold it any longer. — Sections to be declared forfeited. •• . Fredrick Sutton applied for a small piece of a reserve adjoining block 9, Jacobs River Hundred.— The ' Chief Commissioner said it would not be advisable in the interests of the public to grant the application, and it was accordingly refused. Henry Butfc was granted a coal mining area of five acres on the Waikaia commonage at Ll per acre per annum, subject to laid being properly located. Joseph Roderique applied for 600 acres at Raggedy Point, Stewart Island. — It was decided to recommend the Government to constitute the area a run, to he put up at a rent *jA L 2 IDs per acre for a term of ten' The manager of the Colonial Bank wrote lequesting that all the Bank's right, title and interest in bush areas and reserves in connection with G. W. Dawson's Waihopai mill, situated in the Seaward Bush, be transferred to the N.Z. Pine Company. — Transfer sanctioned. A. Day. wrote stating that unless a reduction was made in the rent of section 32, block 14, Chatton, he would give it up.— To be declared forfeited. The Waikaka Progress Committee submitted the names of five deferred payment and perpetual leaseholders in the Waikaka district who had agreed to surrender their sections for the reasons that the railway, the survey of which was made, had not been constructed ; that the land was of inferior quality ; and because the rental of the ad-joining-land had been reduced by one half. ' Sections to be' declared forfeited. Mr. Finn, on behalf of Robert Hutton, applied for a renewal of his license to cut and remove timber on 10 acres in block 6, Waikaia district.— Referred to the Ranger for the district to report. Wm. Key, owner of section 12, block 3, Otama, wrote asking if the small reserve adjoining his land was open for application. As it stood it was of no use to anyone, and had become a regular "rabbit warren " to his annoyance and" cost. — To be offered at L 2 per annum ; failing the acceptance of which steps would be taken to have the land thrown open at from 20s to 30s per Margaret Hutton, for whom Mr Finn appeared, applied for a grazing right over 105 acres of section 4, Waikaia.— Granted at 50s per annum, subject to miners being allowed to work on the land. An extension of term from 10 to 14 years was granted to Thomas E. Wood for his deferred payment section 9, block 8, Invercargill Hundred. Margaret Aitken wrote from Ashburton with reference to her deferred payment section 268, Forest Hill, which was declared forfeited by the Board. If it could be disposed of by the Board for four or five years her sons would then be- able to carry it on. It was all she had to depend on for a living, her husband having spent all his money in improvements, and haying- lost his life by working upon it. — To be informed that the Board is of opinion that it would be to her interest to allow the valuation (at present about L 150) to be reduced, which would be a "greater inducement for parties to take up the section ; also that the Board would take care to bring her circumstances before Government in order that the arrears may be remitted. James Mclntosh wrote asking to have his lease of coal pit near Fairfax brought .under section 9 of the Coal Mines Act, 1886, and the term extended to 25 years.— Granted at a rent of five shillings per acre per annum. Heenan and Dick applied for 300 acres on Ardlussa run {Mataura River Flat) and offered Is per acre.— To be thrown open for application on survey fee being deposited. Michael Malone applied to have section 1, block 7, Lowther, put up for sale.— The chairman said that the section had been offered to R. Howarth ; but if he did not complete his application within a fortnight it would be considered as having lapsed. — Application refused. John Reid and Sons applied for an extension of the. term to 30 years of their pastoral deferred payment license at Slopedown (Otaria).— Granted. A transfer of section 5 of 243, Hokonui from John McKibbin to Robert Ross was sanctioned. . Ranger Mussen reported having valued the improvements on sections 27 and 28, block 4. Mabel, at L-170 10s ; and recommended that the future upset be 15s per acre.— Valuation and upset approved. John Craig applied for a lease of a small reserve'at East Dipton. Ranger Mussen reported that it would probably in a few years be required by the present settlers and he could not recommend the granting of the application. — Refused. Frank McFarlane and Alfred Dicks were granted permission to complete purchases of their sections at Otara and Seaward Bush respectively. Section 57, block 5, Invercargill Hundred, and section 14, block 1, Woodville, were declared forfeited. Small and Co. wrote offering 20s per acre for all timber south of the railway on unsold sections at Pourakino. — Offer accepted. W. S. D. Trotter, Greenvaje station, applied to have 150 acres adjoining his present area set apart as a homestead right. - Granted. James Miller applied for section 10, block 5, Longwood, and it was decided to have it re-opened for application. E. J. Tanner surrendered section 306, Forest Hill. James P. Young wrote requesting that the lease granted for a tramway from Colac Railway Station be made out in favour of Chee Ting and Ly Mut, they having taken over the interest in it from the original applicants. — Granted. With reference to the pastoral runs offered and not sold by auction on the 12th June, it was decided to offer them by auction again at reduced upset prices as follows : — Run 1, Wakaptipu (8500 acres), at L 1 0; Runs 2a and 4, Wakatipu (12,000 acres), at L-10 for terms of ten years. With regard to Run 177 a Waikawa (5500 acres), the Waikawa Progress Committee wrote recommending that part of it be opened for settlement purposes as it was good land.— The Chairman thought it would be advisable to reserve about 2000 auies of this run for settlement purposes. It was better to lease the runs at a low figure than have them unoccupied when the Government would have to keep down the rabbits. Xhe matter was held over for a month for report. Thos. O'Brien was granted lease of the small Government reserve, sections 1 to 5, block 2, Woodend, at 10s per annum. Mr Matthews, on behalf of Mrs Cameron, who had leased run 443, Manapouri, at LlO per annum, asked for a reduction of the rent to L 5 as the run was of a very rough character.T-To be offered again at an upset ofL5 per annum on condition that Mrs Cameron offers that price. Alfred Douglass, sheep and rabbit inspector, Dunedin, forwarded a list showing lands in Southland to be dealt with by the Government for the destruction of rabbits. He did so in order that steps may be taken in Invercargill to have all the available country occupied. — It was resolved that the cnairman and Mr Denniston be appointed a committee ty> looi; into the matter of leasing, jxiwef to ikfit, &S update, etc.

The following applications for water right and races at Pegasus were granted subject to prior rights :— W. J. Hall, three heads from creek N.W. of Trig. C. ; George Bailey, eight heads from Hanning's creek; 3?. W. Thompson, five heads from Healy's creek ; G. E. Tucker, six heads, length one mile ; G. C. Baker and party, -20 heads, length four miles ; Win, Batchelor, two heads, terminating in Spence's creek ; G. A. Birch, six heads, from Big creek, two miles in length ; Roderick Macleod, two heads from Healy's creek ; Pegasus Tin-rnimng Co., 10 heads, two miles in length ; G. E. Tucker, six heads, length, one mile; Thos. Martin, i four heads; and Wm. Smith, junr., four heads on the western boundary of McCh.esriey's claim. * The right to construct a tail race 100 yards in length was granted to R. Manisty, subject to sketch being sent in, and the right to five government heads of water was also granted on the same conditions. • . - Messrs J. Trender and R. Bell applied to lease about 50 acres of open land on the Forest Preservation Reserve (Hokonui), and offered L 2 per annum for same.- — Granted. „ ■• The Board then adjourned.
