New Brooms Wanted.

TO TKE EDITOB. BIR, — As we are on the eve of a general election it is for the electors to decide if we are to have the same form of extravagance aB we have had for the last fifteen years. It is not a question if Sir Robert Stout or Major Atkinson shall lead the House, or any o 1 our former leaders. They have atl been tried and found wanting. It is a question of a purer and simpler form of government. What the country wants is a sterling leader, who will have the courage of his opinions and who will ensure for ua retrenchment and reform. If the electors be true to themselves they will not record a vote for any of our former leaders. The country is quite sound for its liabilities at present but if we go on as has been done in the past it will not be so long. Everyone who has watched the actions of each successive Ministry must have seen how fair they promised before getting into power, promising this reduction and the next, but addiag all the time more taxation. When the Stou'-Vogel Ministry came into power they were to make a great saving and make the country progress " by leaps and bounds." And how did they fulfil their promises 7 By pledging the country deeper than any former Ministry by that job called tbe Mi Hand Railway, which, according to the Premier's own statement, is settled and not settled (it is time the public saw the bottom of this muddle) and likewise spending the sinking fund of the colony. The time is past when a Minister can spend LI2OO in luxurious appointments to an already furnished house. How can a country in a depressed state stand such extravagance, and this is only a small item. Trusting everyone will consider these things at the ballot box— l am, &c, Fabjieb. Mimihau Valley, 15th July, 1887. •
