The Harbor Board has abandoned the id^a of lighting the wharves by the electric light for the present, in view of probable I improvements in electric lighting. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Taylor, who was hurt by the tram accident yesterday, still lies in a critical condition. Hopes are, however, entertained of his ultimate recovery. At the sitting of the Court of Appeal Chief Justioe Prendergast and Justices Richmond and Gillies disposed of the case Johnston v. Maitland and others. The appeal was from the decision given by Mr Justice Williams, of Dunedin, dismissing the motion for a mandamus asked for against the respondents, thtt Chief Commissioner and members of the Ota^o Waste Lande Board, commaiicUnti tlitiu to issue to the appellant .1 pastoral license in terms of section 85 of the Land Act. After considerable argument against, the motion was refused, with costs of appeal, L 97. At a meeting of the Cabinet to-day it was decided to recommend to his Excellency the Governor the names of four gentlemen for appointment as Official Assignees under the new Bankruptcy Act The gentlemen are : — jfor Auckland : Mr John Lawsqn, formerly connected with Broken and Son, and for a time Commissioner for the North Island railways. For Wellington : Mr C. C. Graham, at present Town Qkrk, For Chrietchuyoli sMr fi. '

Latter, a well-known resident. For Dunedin. : Mr J. Awhcroft, until recently editor of the Otafjo Daily Times. The appointments will be gazetted aa coon as his Excellency has given his consent. A meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Rifle Association was held this evening, when the question of reserve ; members competing for the belts was discussed, and it was decided that as the Government subsidised the Association and as the belts were originally derived from the Government fn r the purpose of encouraging the efficiency of the Volunteer force, the Council sees no reason to alter the published programme in that respect: It was also resolved that the following additions be made to the carbine aggregates, viz. : — First prize to be L 25 and a fifth aggregate prize of L 2 10s be added. The question of the prize-list was then considered, and the Council resolved .that as it will be necessary for about 200 men from all parts of the colony to enter for the several matches in order to cover necessary expenditure, the total amount of donations raised in Auckland will be added to the programme should that Dumber be entered ; but if that number be not reached a proportionate sum will be aided to the programme in accordance with the number 'of entries. Major Shepherd, commanding the Auckland district, was elected a vice-president, and Mr A. Dwore a member of the Executive Committee of the Association. White, of the Bank Hotel, has received a letter from Austin, agent for Scott the pedestrian, in which he says — "Me your offer to give LIOO for Scott and Edwards to contest a 48 hours' walk at Wellington, on behalf of Scott I decline that offer, as the trip would be too expensive and with no certainty of success ; but if you will arrange a 24 hours' walk as well, and in the event of either man winning both events, the loser to receive L 25 out of gate receipts, then I will accept for Scott." It is understood, that both White and Edwards' agent, Mr Seymour, are willing to agree to these terms, so that the match will come off at an early dote. Dr King, of the Lunatic Asylum, has been asked to take ,o£ Wellington Hospital in place of Dr Hammond who, it 16 understood, retires from that institution almost immediately. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. At the Hospital Board meeting to-day the following resolution was passed with a view to having the Board's status defined in reference to the value of recommendations made by it to Government — " That the whole of the works required in the improvement of the hospital buildings (new kitchen, etc.) as specified in the Board's letter of March 23rd, 1882, be recommended to be done forthwith." A four-roomed cottage at Merivale was burnt this morning. It was iusured for LIOO with tho Northern Assurance Company. The marble bust of Garibaldi, executed to the order of the Italian residents here, has been received. The work is said to be admirable. It will be formally presented to the museum. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The Land Board at a meeting to-day granted a re-hearing in the Waikouaiti dummy ism cases. Messrs Green and Clark, who were adverse to the cancellation of the licenses, alleged that they left the previous meeting on the understanding that the motion for the cancellation had been lost. The sum of LI 50 hag been received from Otago in aid of the destitution existing in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Of this sum LBO was raised in Oamaru district alone. The question of dummyism, decided at last meeting of the Land Board, is to be re-opentd under the following circumstances: — There were two parties of suspected dummies, one being in Waikouaiti district, on the run formerly held by Mr Orbell, and the other in Silvor Peak district, on the run partly orpned by Gellibrand and Co. At the meeting last week, Mr Stout carried a motion cancelling the licenses of the holders in both districts. This being carried after Messrs Green and Claris had left the meeting, these gentlemen to-day asserted that before they left a resolution had actually been negatived on the casting vote of the chairmaD, which proposed to cancel the licenses of the holders on Mr Obeli's run. The chairman does not agree with this assertion, maintaining that no resolution was formally put except Mr Stout's, but on the ground that the finnl decision was arrived at under a misapprehension by Messrs Green and Clark, the Board has agreed to grant a re-hearing in the Orbell'B run cases, when Mr Stout returns from Wellington.
