The High School Sports.

A finer day than that on which the scholars of the High School celebrated their athletic spoits could not possibly have been chosen ; and the cricket ground, on which the sports vvera held looked at its very best. The brightness of the weather had attracted a large number of ladies, whose gay costumes lent an additional charm to the scene. The sports commenced at one o'clock, Messrs J. C.Thomson and A. Gr. Stewart acting as judges, Mr F. W. Wade officiating 1 as referee, Mr C. McLean as starter, and Mr G. W. Blancliflower, 8.A., head master of the school, seeming to be all over the field at the same time, directing, controlling, a&d personally looking after every detail, and contributing much by his presence and example towards the success of the different events. There was a large number of Hat races on the programme, several of the lads showing good running powers,; and being by no ! means lacking- in form, The smaller the boys the keener the interest they seemed to take in these trials of strength. One lad, who displayed a great partiality for long races, took things so very coolly at first that he was looked upon as husbanding his strength for the final effort, but when the time for spurting came lie had generally been passed by so many of his comrades that spurting would have done him no good, and he wisely, therefore, refrained from increasing his spaed till the next eyont. The hurdle racu attracted a good deal of attention, as hurdle races alway3 do, and was won in eood style by Master T. Moffett, who at the end ol' Hie day's spuiLs fuuutl himself, faiily entitled to the champion's cup for allround success. The sack races and Siamese 1 races exciled the u«ua,l amount of merriment," the fun in the latter arising from the contrast in height presented by many of those who were in temporary partnership. The Uigh jumping and pole vaulting attracted a good deal of: interest, some of the smaller Jads displaying great proficiency in the latter somewhrt difficult sport. The following are the particulars of the events with the ni^ea of the winners . — Open Evbnts. Throwing Cricket Ball— lst, T D Moffett (71 yards) ; 2nd, G F Watson ; 3rd, q McCloskey. The events on the programmee having thus been all satisfactorily disposed of, a Consolation Race was contested, which was won by J, Martin. The lads appeared to be highly pleased with their afternoon's performances, and before separating gave three lusty chsera, in honor successively of their masters, the ladies, and the chamnoin of the school, T. Moffett. _______ __
