The New Zealand Shipping Co. announce that they have made arrangements for monthly steam communication with Britain. They have contracted for building a line of steamers of 4000 tons gross register each, to be constructed of steel, <vud fitted with refrigerators. Pending the completion of their owq steamers they are chartering suitable vessels to begin the running at once. The first will leave London for Lyttelton direct on January 20th. She is named the British King, 3559 tons register, built by Harland and Wooli, Belfast, builders of the White Star liners, and of P. and 0. Co's. most recent addition, the Shannon. The Lyttelton regatta committee have decided to allow crews to row in the champion four-oar race, with or without coxswains. The objections raised in Wellington will thus be obviated. Entries are due on Ist December. A case came before the R.M. Court today which revealed the fact that the boundaries of the new Avon and Riccarton Road Boards have been so muddled in the proclamation that they are useless. The following will form the team to play in the Auckland match : — D. Ashby, W. Frith, E. T. A. Fuller ; T. D. Harman, W. P. Reeves, F. Welding, E. Barnes, J. Fowk, J. Hartland, A. M. Ollivier and G. A. Watson. This is a good all-round team with only one incapable bat in it, and five bowlers, two of whom, Fuller and Frith, are in excellent form this season. It is considered that the match will be a good, one, and public opinion favors the lonal men, though upon what ground it would be difficult to soy. Dr Watkins, a very old and well known colonist, especially to visitors and residents on the Peninsula, died at Akaroa this moraing at the age of 91. DUNE DIN, Tuesday. A fatal accident occurred to-day to Thomas Sayrrs, aged 16 ypars, in the employment of Mr Ritchie, baker, at Port Chalmers. He was in the act of backing a horse into the shafts of a cart when the animal rushed forward, and, whilst he was trying to stop it, the hors^ plunged and kicked him in the chest. He was immediately carried into a house close by,' and a messenger despatched for Dr Drysdale, but before that gentleman's arrival life wag extinct. The three men dismissed from the Locomotive Department have sent in apologies admitting their insubordination, and undertaking in future to abstain from any action that would promote diacc ntent among their fellows.
