EAST INVERCARGILL BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of. the Council took place on Monday night. Present — Councillors Graham (in the chair), Hast, Hughes, McAlister, Munro, Smith, and Stewart. In the absence of the Mayor, Councillor Graham presided.

A communication from the secretary of the Railway Demonstration Fund for a donation from the borough towards the outlay incurred in connection with the recent demonstration was read and considered. All the members /cordially -agreed; to comply with the request .to the extent of £5, which they considered would 1 be in proportion to the revenues of the East Invercargill and Invercargill Boroughs. A motion to that effect was made, and carried.

A similar application from the secretary of the Southland Hospital was favorably entertained, and £15 was voted to the institution. ..,.."' * ■■■

A progress payment of £20 ; to Cahill and Co., contractors for the formation of Ritchie street, was ordered.

The Clericwas instructed to give; the necessary statutory notice to the owner: of land through which it had been resolved that drains should be formed.

The Council having .agreed, in the interests of economy, that the office of Inspector of Nuisances' might be dispensed with, his duties being undertaken by a surface-man, the clerk ' was instructed to obtain the lopinioh . 'of the Council's Solicitor as to the requisite notice to be given to the Inspector. The Clerk was instructed to obtain the signature of the chief f surveyor; fto the borough maps, and to take the necessary steps for getting the vacancy filled up caused by Cr Hannah's resignation. The tenders of Messrs Brayiand Messrs James Ford and Co., for the supply of gravel, were declared as too high. The Works Committee were directed to inspect the levels- of North f Mary street, and make arrangements for the gravelling, and report at a special meeting to be held on the 7th instant. A list of arrears of rates, amounting in total to 18s, was laid on the table,, and -accoimts to the amount of about £19 were directed to be paid. The Council then adjourned.
