. As is announced by telegram, elsewhere, the opening of through railway communication from invercargili to Christchurch is . fixed to take place on Wednesday next. This is definite, and conclusive, and it now rests with the local authorities to complete preparations for a beebmiiig demonstration in honor of the . auspicious event. Not only, however, are the authorities pledged in this matter, but the citizens themselves are called upon to contribute to the utmost of their /ability to render the demonstration a thorough success. Never before has such an occasion arisen for town and district to assert themselves. Scores of our northern friends will visit Southland for the first time, and upon the principle that first impressions are always the strongest and most lasting, it is imperative that there should be an attractive and substantial demonstra tion. We hope to see the town brilliantly illuminated and not only a general turn out of the townspeople but the presence of thousands from the country districts. The opening of the line will will be a connecting link in more senses than one between North and South. It will more than ever render Southland an integral part of the colony, will we trust smooth many existing ruggosities of intercourse, and indubtably demonstrate the identity of interests between North and South. Of the great profit that must accrue to this town there is not the slightest doubt, and we sincerely believe that with the opening of the line, a new era of prosperity will dawn upon this district.
