The New Zealand Shipping Company s fine clipper chip Waimea berthed alongside the wharf yesterday afternoon, having arrived at 4 p.m in tow of the p.s Koputai from Dunedin The Waimea although only 843 tons register is one of the finest of the Company s ships, and is this voyage commanded by Lap.,. Mathers, who has on two previous occasions visited this port, about 3 years ago in the E >ka ; a, and 2 years ago in the Otaki. lhe Waimea loaded here in 1875, and during her vogages to and fro lrom London to New Z-aland has always been fortunate in making good passage?. She has on beard about 400 tons of general cargo, being part of original cargo from London, and will begin discharging to-morrow morning, after which she will take the berth as the first wool ship of the Bei The' s.b Wanganui left Port Chalmers for the Bluff at 7.30 p.m yesterday. At 10 p.m being abreast of tbe Gull Rock, a steeraga passenger of the name of Crawford was seen from the bridge by the look out man to climb upon the bulwarks by the starboard anchor and throw himself overboard. The engine was stopped immediately, and the life buoj thrown overboard, the engine was then reversed and the boat lowered away with four men in her, which pulled in the direction the man was supposed to be. After pulling about for over an hour the boat was taken on board. During the whole time the steamer was kept steniring rrund with, two men aloft keeping a good look out, when after a fruitless search of an hour and a half the boat was called in. The state of the weather at the time was a fresn breeze from the B.W. with a nasty rolling sea
