LINDHURST ROAD BOARD.

This Board meet yesterday, specially to consider any objections which might be lodged against the Board carrying out its resolution to borrow up to L3OOO, but it was agreed that ordinary business might also be transacted.

Present — Messrs McGibbon (in the chair) Morton, Calvert, Elliot, Thomson, Fleming, Strang, Marshall, and Brydone.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

In approaching the special business the chairman said he hoped that all understood the position ; the Board had no power to borrow if two thirds of the ratepayers objected, but if any less number protested, the Board could act a.s it deemed fit. He trusted tha.t all objections would he fairly considered a!nd weighed. Three objections were then opened, one of which was couched in such insulting terms that the Board declined to receive the body of the document, although later on iv the proceedings the chairman counted the signatures appended to it when reckoning the number of votes which protested against the borrowing scheme. The result was that out of 205 votes on the roll 27 objected. It having been ascertained that every provision of the Act had been fully camplied with, It was moved by Mr jO'leming, seconded by Mr Thomson and carried unanimously, '■ That the Board's resolution to borrow up to L3OQO to complete main district roads be confirmed.'

A conversation took place as to the mode of bor-rowing, and the following resolution was unanimously carried on the motion of Mr Fleming, seconded by Mr Calvert — "Xhat a Finance Committee to consist of Messrs Fleming, Elliot, Calyert, and McG-ibbon be appointed, and authorised to, issue debentures of LIOO each at eight pc^ 1 cant, with ten years' currency, and to dispose o? nofc'japre (;lian fifteen," Letters' from Mr Watson, on behalf of the New Zealand IVfeat Preserving Company, and ' from Mr John Brown were received, protesting against the closing ot a certain road at Woodjands until a, new projected road wss ma^e and opened for traffic. contract time to complete his contract to erect a bridge, but notified that the penalty would be enforced after that period had elapsed if the werk was not finished.

A conversation took placa relative to the sludge channel and other matters at Waimumu, and it was ultimately resolved on the motion of Mr Brydone, seconded by Mr Elliot—" That the Engineer be requested to report on a proposed deviation of two creeks through blocks 21 and 54, Lindhurst, and also to examine and report upon taking the proposed sludge channel from the Waimumu creek at a point about 60 chains higher up the creek than originally proposed. A letter was received from Mr Hislop stating that the Education Board had no power to alienate any land vested in it without special Act of Parliament.

The Board adjourned.
