THE BALL.

The complimentary ball given by the citizens of Invorcargill to the American transit .of Venus observers, and the officers of the Swatara, took place last night in the Volunteer Drill Shed. The Ball Committee are to be congratulated on the complete and admirable nature of their arrangements. The shed, under their direction, was decorated in a manner quite new for Invercargill. The lamps on the walla wore encircled with the usual wreaths of fresh green, and, in some instances, flowering foliage, and a new feature m the decorations were the numerous particolored flags — American, and of other nations — which were made to form the ceiling, a most appropriate and fanciful one. The other arrangements were equally perfect. Mr Hautrie West furnished the music, and Mr Daniel Kingaland the supper and other refreshments. The music ira& excellent; and the supper, which was laid out in a large marquee at the rear of the shed, was, as regarded the manner of its arrangement, elegant, and in itself, eumptuous. Daubing commenced about ten o'clock, at which time the guests "of the evening arrived, and were received at the door by a -Reception Committee, and inducted into the ball-room. At first the room was not by any means full, but. gradually numbers began to assemble^ and ere long a large company of ladie&and. gentlemen were enjoying thema&Jres in the moat hearty manner. Bancing was prolonged till an early hour in the morning.
