Hokitika, Jan 19. The first batch of settlers for the new settlement at Jackson's Bay left yesterday by the steamer Wai para. At Westport on Sunday night, the cargo boats which had conveyed the machinery for the Halcione claim up the Mohiltinui Eiver, on their return capsized, when five men were drowned. Their names are — Peter Seaton, "William Miller, William Hall, Benjamin Rundell, and Nichol George. The sixth man, Carter, escaped. OamabU, Jan 18. A sad accident occurred at the Waitaki river yesterday. Miss Jennie Anderson, the magicienne, and troupe, were crossing to the Canterbury side, when the male members of the party walked across the bridge, but an express, containing all the properties, which attempted to cross by the ford above, got into deep water and capsized. The driver was washed to a pile of the bridge and rescued. Miss Anderson (Mrs Martin) was twice grasped while floating under the bridge, but her clothing gave way, and she was drowned. An inquest will be held to-day. Everything belonging to the troupe, including a box containing money, &c, was lost in the river. The express horse, and two performing dogs, belonging to the troupe, were drowned. The general feeling here is that crossing the river, except in the ferry boat or by the bridge, should be at once prohibited.
