HIGHLAND SOCIETY OF SOUTHLAND

At the annual general meeting of the Society, held on Friday, the sth inst., in the Pipers’ Rooms, Leven street, the report and balance-sheet disclosed a very successful year, there being a balance of £4 11 to credit, which was thought very satisfactory, seeing that the annual gathering absorbed £«95 in expenses. The election of officers resulted as follows : —Chief, Mr A. McGregor ; Chieftain, Mr T>. McFarlane ; 2nd Chieftain, Mr K. Findlayson ; Hon. Secretary, Mr Geo. Taylor ; Treas., Mr Jno. McKellar ;1 Auditor, Mr dno. Matheson ; Town Committee ; Messrs R. McKay, R. A. Young, R. Walker, C. W. Wilson, R. Jenkins, R. Turpin, G. R. McGaw, and Dr. Stewart ; Country Committee : Messrs A. McLeod, W. Park (South Invercargill;, Jno. Mcßae (Hokonui), G. McAlpine (Riverton), iP. Reynolds (Winton), Jno. Fraser (Centre Bush) ; Bards; Messrs A. Kinross (Invercargill), Neil McFadzien (Morton Mains) A. Mcßae (Winton), and Jno. McKean ('Caroline). The annual subscription was fixed at ss, as in previous years.

After the business was finished the membees had some social enjoyment.: Several pipers were there, and a variety" of tunes were played, Pipers Wilson and Jenkins taking leading parts. Music induces dancing, and in compliance with a request, Mr Kinross danced a hornpipe. Afterwards Misses McLeod and Parks, and Messrs Wilson and Kinross danced a strathspey and reel in Scotch style. During intervals, conversation and recitations pleasantly passed the time.
