District News

LONG BUSH, Long Bush, to most people, is a well-known district, about ten miles from Invercargill. The bush itself was never very large, but to my knowledge there have been four sawmills erected in it at different times, the last one belonging to Messrs Kilkelly Bros., which was recently removed. to Spar Bush.. Some of the residents have been settled here ifor many years. There has been a school in the district since 1.&62 —a period of 49 years, and I think the only surviving member of the committee that was elected at that time to manage the business in connection with, the school, is Mr George Daw-son,-Ah Woodlands. On Friday. 6th Oct., the annual school concert will be held in the Long Bush school, commencing at 8 p.m., and as usual there will be a dance to follow, which should add greatly to the evening’s enjoyment for the younger people, and we hope to asee a large attemhmee, for school funds take a lot of scraping to meet the expenditure, MABEL BACHELORS’ BALL. This important event took place last Wednesday evening, Sept. 13th, in the local hall, and it was ai pronounced success. The bachelors had the hall tastefully decorated, and spared no pains in having everything spick, and spam. The lion’s share of the work fell on the painstaking secretary (Mr Wm. McGillivray, ably assisted by the chairman (Mr Alick Wilson). The Master of Ceremonies was the capable Mr Gavin Amos. Splendid music was supplied by Messrs Aldridge Bros., from InvercargiW, on the piano and violin, and was a treat, in itself. The Grand March was led off by Mr A. Wilson and Aliss Kerr, fully 40 couples taking part. Dancing was carried out with great vigour, and a more sociable function wa.s never held at Mabel. Refreshments were provided in abundance. During an interval Mr H. Bridgman contributed a song that was highly appreciated by the company. The bachelors have every reason to be highly elated at the success of their gathering. Visitors were present from Invercargill and all the surrounding districts, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Mabel bachelors are to be congratulated on the success of their ball, as the one of 1.911 has eclipsed all previous fixtures .
