SOUTHLAND RIFLE TEAMS’ CHALLENGE ASSOCIATION.

Shooting men aspiring to places in either of the teams interested, will do well to peruse the subjoined conditions relating to the corps’ trophy matches, their very complete nature going to prove that the committee is thoroughly in earnest in the matter, and their reasonableness should appeal to all marksmen as likely to attain the desired object with the least possible expense. At a meeting of the committee of this Association held in the Garrison Hall on Saturdij, November 3rd, the following conditions were adopted : 1. That the name be the Southland Rifle Teams’ Challenge Association. 2. Open to teams of ten men from all volunteer corps and rifle clubs in Southland. 3. Matches to be 7 shots and 2 sighteis at 200, 300, 500, and 600 yards ; one range to be fired each month. 4. Matches to be fired on Grasmere range on the second Wednesday in each month. In the event of a holiday or bad weather interfering, to be fired on the following Wednesday. Captain Murphy- to be weather judge, and notice to be posted in Messrs A. & W. McCarthy’s at noon on day of match. 5. Each corps will pay 2s 6d for marking expenses, payment of which must be made on the range to the treasurer on the day of shooting. Teams in arrears with markers’ fee to be debarred from competing until payment is made. 6. Each man firing in the match pays sixpence (6d) towards the trophy fund. Thus, at the end of the twelve months it. is expected that at least £lB will be collected, which goes to purchase a trophy to be competed for the following year. Bach man will still continue to contribute his 6d to provide a trophy for the third year, and so on. 7. The trophy will be held monthly by the winning team, thb team winning it most times in the year returning it as their own property. 8. In the event of a tie at the end of the year the teams tying will shoot

off —7 shots and 2 sighters at 200, 500, and 600 yards. 9. Winning team’s name to be engraved on trophy each month at the winners’ expense. 10. Volunteers who are members of rifle clubs will shoot for their corps in preference to the club. 11. No averaging for men absent will be allowed. The scores to be taken for those only who shoot. 12. Teams to be sent into the Southern Cross office not later than Thursday preceding match. Names of skippers to be sent in with team. ]3. Shooting to commence on arrival of one o’clock car. Each corps in town and the Southland Rifle Club is represented on the committee of this Association, the rpresentatives being as follows : Captain Joe Johnston (Chairman of Association) Southland Rifle Club ; Sergeant A. R. Wills, Invercargill City Guards ; Corporal A. Lyall (secretary and treasurer), Oreti Rifles; Sergeant Bugler Edwards, Awarua Rifles ; Corporal Ohas Todd, Southland Mounted Rifles ; Corporal 0. C. Moffett, Mercantile Rifles. The Committee meets in the Garrison Hall on the last Saturday of each month to make all arrangements in connection with the matches, and to consider all matters of interest that may crop up. It would be very gratifying to the promoters of this Association if such corps and rifle clubs as the Gore Rifles, Winton Rifles, Bluff Guards, Mataura Rifle Club and Wyndham Rifle Club were to join the Association, and send in a team each month to take part in the competitions. A. LYALL, Sec and Treas.
