A welcome addition has been made to the Australian racing ranks by the arrival in Sydney of an American racing team consisting of J. Lawson (who has a world’s competition record to his credit of fifty-four seconds for the half mile), J. M. Chapman, W. B. Vaughan, and C. B. Bowles. The team is a strong one, and should do well in the colonies. Lawson and Chapman are a crack tandem crew, and are desirions of meeting any Australian team in a match or for a sweepstake. P. O’Brien, the Hew South Wales League secretary, is trying to fix up negotiations for a match between the visiting team and Walne and Megson, probably the fastest tandem crew in. Australia. * * «= . The most vital portion of the pneumatic tyre is the air chamber, which is more familiarly known as the inner tube; and unless this is made of the purest and most elastic indiarubber, it cannot perform its duties properly, or with the best result. The inner tubes used in all Dunlop tyres are of the finest possible quality, and are subjected to exhaustive tests previous to leaving the Company’s factory. *= * * J. Green, the crack English racing cyclist, who had such a successful racing season out here in 1897 and 1898, returned to Melbourne last week by the R.M.S. Britannia. Green looks younger, if anything, than when he was out here two years ago, and appears to be in first-class form. According to Green’s most recent racing on the Continent, he is very little inferior to the best of the Continental crack sprinters, and he has only to reproduce his European form in the colonies to have a successful trip. Green has not yet completed arrangements as to the make of machine he will ride during his sojourn out here, but like the majority of Australian cracks he will ride Dunlop tyres. * * * The three Americans Lawson, Vaughan, and Chapman—have enteered for the Austral Wheel Race meeting, and should prove a draw. As showing the calibre of these men 1 we give the following list of their placed performances during the past American racing season : Ists. 2nds. Srds.

Lawson proved the second most successful rider during ,the season, Stevens being the only other rider to score more wins, whilst the LawsonChapman tandem combination proved themselves the fastest in the States, with seven firsts, four seconds, and one third. The above trio, who are riding Duclops, will make matters lively for our racing cracks during the next few months, should they succeed in reproducing their American form. =* * * How that the Dunlop Welch rim is slightly modified by the flattening of the previously circular edges to an elliptical section, there is a broader surface for the edges of the cover to take firm hold of the rim. It is this shape which allows the outer cover to be put on and taken off without mechanical assistance, and to remain, when the inner tube is inflated, with perfect security.
