NO SEATS FOR SHOP GIRLS.

The Seats for Shop Girls Act, ■which carre into force in Britain with the new year (writes an Express correspondent), is being openly disregarded by many shopkeepers. Witbin the last few days the inspectors appointed by the London County Council, whose duty it is to visit shops and see that the new law is carried into effect, have been apprised by a number of shop assistants that their respective employers have not only failed to abide by the new regulation, but have made the condition of work for girls expressing a wish to benefit by it extremely hard. Several girls have written to the authorities to say that their situations have been made most precarious because they have ventured to sit down behind the counters, and several have been dismissed, while others have been refused an increase of salary. The employers for their part assert that the girls want to sit down all day, and that such a spectacle retards trade, and gives customers the idea that very little business is transacted. The matter is to come up before the Council, and an inquiry will be held in due course.
