At the Wyndham Police Court on Wednesday Charles H. Arnett was brought before Messrs I. W. Raymond and W. R. F. Fraser, J.’sP., and charged with the theft of £630, the property of Chas. Milne. The accused was also further charged with having on October 29 attempted to murder Chas. Milne, W. Gordon, and John White, at Edendale, by administering poison—to wit, strychnine. On the application of Inspector Pardy the accused was remanded for a week. It has been alleged in connection with the first charge that the accused received cheques .from Mr Sullivan, rabbit exporter, to forward to Milne, and failed to do so. As to the second charge, it is alleged that he was at the rabbiters’ camp on the day the men took ill, and that he was in the habit of buying large quantities of strychnine for rats from the chemist at Mataura. Arnett, who has hitherto enjoyed the esteem and respect of his acquaintances, is a half-caste, and came to Mataura from Riverton, where he had been employed in the poet and telegraph offices. He obtained an engagement in the freezing works at Mataura and finally became foreman. He left the works two years ago to act as agent for Mr Sullivan, who is now on his way to England Arnett seems to have had no apprehension as to his coming arrest. He attended a dance on the night of the 7th and went to Dunedin by the express next day on business, and on the road passed Chief Detective Campbell and Detective Campbell, who were on the way to Mataura to arrest him, Arnett ia a member of the Mataura Athletic Society and of the Mataura Falls Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., and an honorary member of the band. Our Mataura correspondent states that a rumour is current that evidence has been found connecting Arnett with the the burglary at the Mataura post office on Christmas night, 1894.
