CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR CONVENTION AT RIVERTON.
[contributed.] In spite of the inclement weather on Easter Monday a good number of Christian Endeavourers went by the special train to Riverton for the purpose of attending the convention held there under the auspices of the Invercargill and District Endeavour Union. The weather seemed in no way to depress the spirits of the young people, for merry peals of laughter and sweet singing were heard all along the journey. On arrival at Riverton the party w r as met by the Rev. T. Newbold and Mr Whiteford, President of the local C. E. Society, and a large number of friends, and were escorted to the drill shed, where a capital meeting of praise and prajer was held until lunch time.
A good cup of tea was provided and as all Endeavourers had taken their lunch baskets with them an enjoyable quarter of an hour was spent. At 2 p.m. the convention proper began with an address by the Fresh dent (Rev. G. Lindsay) from the text, ‘ Let the mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.’ He said that was to be a motto for Endeavourers for the coming year. The various societies then responded at the call with verses of Scripture aod hymns. Mr McLean followed with an address on ‘ The Work of the Holy Spirit,’ which was eagerly listened to. The
Rev. P. W. Jones dealt with ‘ The work of the Look-out committee,’ and the Rev. W. White, M;A., -gave an able and lucid exposition of what prayer should be. A Free Parliament ca,ught on well, and for 30 minuses various speakers discoursed on different topics of interest. ‘ The Sunshine Committee’s work’ was then taken up by Mr Buchanan and was followed by a pointed address on ‘Evangelistic work,’ by the Rev. W. C. Oliver. The last paper was on ‘TheMissionary aspect of the Endeavour movement,’ and was well handled by the Rev. W, Woollass. A ‘ rally ’ in the open air was held at 3.30, and brief earnest addresses given to a large number of people who wondered at seeing so many young folks standing up to witness for Christ. Three cheers were given for the Riverton Society just before the train moved off, and they responded in similar strains for the other societies. Thus what appeared in the morning like a most miserable day turned out to be the best day the Endeavourers of Southland had spent together.
