A mail for the United Kingdom closes at Invercargill at 10.15 a.m. on the 25th inst. The new post office buildings will be opened for tbe despatch of business to-day. An entertainment in aid of the funds of the Spring Hill school will be given on the evening of Friday next, 25th inst. The South of England is suffering from drought, and the heat is interfering with the traffic in London. London merchants expect that there will be a large demand during the coming season for factory made butter, provided prime is shipped Mr Mundella lately stated in the House of Commons that the estimated amount of a day’s wages of the industrial classes of the United Kingdom is two million pounds sterling. . On account of tbs inclement weather on Thursday evening the City Band was obliged to pjustpjone its proposed promenade concert in the Hospital Grounds to a future date.

Makin, the > Sydney child-destroyer, was executed on the 15th inst. It is understood, that he has left a statement declaring that the child for whose murder he was convicted was rot correctly identified. That, however, is a minor point in view of the fact that a number of bodies were found in his back yard. A trap containing two Sisters of Mercy capsized over an embankment near Ikamatua, Eeefton. One, known as Sister Mary Gertrude, had her neck broken ; the other is not seriously injured. The Legislative Council has, ‘by 20 votes to 18, rejected the Marriage with a De~ ceased Husband’s Brother Bill.

James Stanbury, the Australian sculler, who holds the championship of the world, has rowed Jacob Gaudaur, champion of America, for a stake of £7OO, and the world’s championship, winning by three lengths. At the Police Court on Thursday, Messrs Perkins and McFarlane presiding, Mary Lang, licensee of the Golden Fleece hotel, was fined £5, and 18s costs, for supplying beer to an intoxicated person—a woman. The latter had previously been refused drink at the Stag’s Head hotel. The licensed victuallers, in conference at Christchurch, have pledged themselves to support only those candidates who will oppose the direct veto and prohibition, and have decided to start a special fund to defray expensee that will be necessarily incurred at the forthcoming election, such fund to be made up by asking each hotel to contribute the sum of £5, payment to be borne by the owners and lessee. In Sydney on the 16th inst., wheat, chick, was selling at 3s 3d per bushel; millling, 3s 7d. Oats—Fair feed, 2s to 2s 9d; bright feed, 2s to 2s lOd; Tartarians, 3s. Maize. 3s 6d. Barlej (Cape), 2s lOd to 3s. Potatoes —Local, £5; Circular Heads, £6 10s. Onions, £8 10s. Butter—Dairy, lOd; factory. Is. Cheese, 3d to sd. Bacon, 4d to 6£d; hams (New Zealand), Is. An occasional suite of furniture, made to the order of Mr Gill, of the Mutual Life Association, has been on view in Mr Alfred Dewe’s shop, Kelvin St., where it was made. The timber is Eimu, or red pine, and the suite, upholstered in tapestry and plush, is well and substantially finished. Wm, Lewis and Co. have a very special intimation in our advertising columns this morning. Their buyer has evidently not been deterred by the storm on sea and land, to be present at the big sale of J. E. Nathan and Go’s stock, wholesale warehousemen and manufacturers, Wellington, who have retired from business.
