DEATH AT 100 YEARS. AN INTERESTING CAREER The death of the old Maori Avoman, Margaret Rangitukia, better known as“ Kate the Guide,” which took place at Whakatane last Friday Aveek at the age of 100 years, removes an interesting link between past and present generations of natives. “Kate,” Avho A\as the Avife of Mr Olag Petterson, Avas born at the Opotiki Mission Station on November 8. 1324, and has lived through a great variety of experience. She avus guide at Rotorua to the Duke of Edinburgh and to the Duke of York —noAX King George—on the occasion of their visits 'to Ncav Zealand. She Avas also associated Avith' the late Captain Gilbert Mair in the Maori Avar, and was at Whakatane at the time of Te Kooti’s raid. About GO years ago “Kate” Jived down into the late at Rotorua to rescue people from a capsized canoe, and going down too deep she became affected Avith deafness. At the lime of the Tarawera eruption in 1886 she was also instrumental in the rescue of several children from the debris. The deceased ahvays enjoyed excellent health until a recent short illness and her faculties were present till the last. The funeral took place at the Opihi cemetery on the sandhills on the folloAving Sunday. -
