The Telegraph Department sends the following :—“ Batavia advises that they got the ship this morning at 7.30. Batavia seems to have a troublesome job. The mail rfom Singapore has not arrived.” At 9 p.m. the Cable Company advised New Zealand that the Singapore-Batavia cable had been restored, and traffic between England and Australia resumed. Such long-continued changeable weather during the summer has never been remembered at Waimate. With the exception of a couple of fine days, the last fortnight has been a mixture of all kinds of weather from cold and stormy to damp and calm. There is no doubt that so much cold and rough weather, with unusual want of sunshine, is keeping from maturity the cereals in this part of South Canterbury, and consequently crops will be late in many parts of the district, and it is feared that there will be inferior quality in many of the grain crops. Cure for Cholera Infantum Never known to Fail.—During last May an infant child of our neighbour was suffering from cholera infantum. The doctors had given up all hopes of recovery. I took a bottle of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera, and Diarrhoea Remedy, to the house, telling them that I felt sure that it would do good if used according to directions. In two days’ time the child had fully recovered. The child is now vigorous and healthy. I have recommended this remedy frequently, and have never known it to fail. — Mrs Curtis Baker, Bookwalter, Ohio. For sale by Canterbury Farmers’ Co-op. Assn., Ltd.

The first heat of the Rowing Club’s Trial Pair Oar Race came off last evening. The contesting crews were:—Healey (stroke) and D. Shaw, and W. Shaw (stroke) and Packer. The course was about threequarters of a mile long, with two turns, along the rubble wall. The water was nice and smooth, and everything was suitable for the race from a contestant’s point of view. Healey’s crew got away smartly and at the first turn were a length ahead, Shaw going unsteadily. The advantage was increased to about three lengths on the return to the far buoy, and on coming home Healey eased up, winning by about six lengths. Several of the heats will be rowed this evening, and some close contests should be witnessed.
