; Fatal Boat Accident. AUCKLAND, January 5. Mr W. H. Herlett, of Whangarei, was drowned by the capsizing of a boat. His wife saw the accident, and his son rowed to the rescue, but arrived too late.
Death of a Veteran.
THAMES, January 5.
Henry Menary, aged 65, died in the hospital of pneumonia. He was an old Crimean veteran and served during the Indian Mutiny and Maori war.
Death of Mr T. Brown. WESTPORT, January 5. Mr Thomas Brown, district manager of the Weatport Coal Company died this morning of heart disease He had a long illness, but carried through the arbitration case last week.

DUNEDIN, January 6.
Francis Herriot Laing was to-day committed for tried for forging a cheque for £l6, There are three other charges.
