The Manawatn Standard says : —"The meth'ods adopted by the Valuation Department in altering valuations at every meeting of the local bodies, is likely to •be a fruitful source of litigation in this district, as both the Manawatu Road Board and Borough Council are certain to be involved in test cases at an early date through the action of the Department. A Cheviot correspondent writes to the Lyttelton Times that the ketch Maud Graham, which went ashore at Port Robinson last week, is rapidly breaking up. The heavy seas caused the vessel to part amidships, and the masts have both been washed out of her. Very little of the cargo has come ashore, and she is now a total loss. The two men who have, been at work on the chrome deposits recently discovered at the CroiselleshaVe struck the lode on the north as well as on the south side of the hill, and the existence of a large body of the mineral is considered to be assured. About 200 tons have beer, taken out and stacked. A temporary wire tramway is now being constructed to the beach, and a trial shipment of 50 tons will be sent to England at once.
