THE AUSTRALIANS V, SOMKR-

SETSHIRB.

(PlB Eliotbio telegraph,—uopybioht )

(Per Press Association.)

(Received 5.30 p.m., July 21st.) i London, July 20, The weather having cleared it was decided to proceed with the match between the Australians and Somersetshire. The recent rains had rendered the wicket very heavy, and it was all in favour of the bowlers. McLeod, Jarvis, and Walter Giffen were omitted from the visiting team. The country team batted first* and were all out for 119 runs. The leading scores were — Palairet... 30 Hill 21 Turner took 4 wickets for 43, Conningham 2 for 19, Trumble 2 for 13. (Received 9.10 p.m., July 21st.) At Taunton to-day the crowd was very angry when the decision first came to postpone the Somersetshire match. Though the sun was shining the ground was very wet. Owing to a misunderstanding it was believed that the colonials desired to avoid the match. As the Australians passed the townsfolk they were hooted, but the spectators cheered them. Eventually the umpire re-examined the ground and ordered that a start be made. The bowlers got a lot of work on the ball, and the batsmen in trying to force the score were nearly s.Il caught out. The third wicket fell with the score at 72. The remainder, however, collapsed. The fielding of the visitors was good, especially that of Graham, Bruce and Trumble.
