St. John Ambulance Association.

The annual general meeting of members o the South Canterbury branch of the Bt. John Ambulance Association was held in tfai Kindergarten Hell, Bank atreet, yesterday afternoon. There wae an excellent attendance of ladies,'and the Yen. Archdeacon Harper, Dr Lovegrove, Messrs M. J. Knubley, and F, Zftall, represented the male members of the society. On the motion of the Yen. Arch* deacon Harper, Mra M. M. Jones, the honorary secretary, wae voted to the chair, and the meeting was briefly opened by this lady. She announced that the branch had 68 members, II of whom were men. The lecturers to the branch were Drs Hogg, Thomas, and Beid, and the candidates who had presented themselves had been examined by Dr Lovegrove. Before calling on Arch*, deacon Harper to give out tbe certificates Dr Lovegrove said a few complimentary words on the excellence of tbe examination, tbe ladias especially coming in for a warm meed of praise. The importance of tbe work of the association was dwelt on, and he gave especial credit on the - splendid quality of the papers. The Yen. Archdeacon Harper then distributed tbe certificates to those who bad pasted the examination for “ first aid to (he injured” as follows Miss Bushe, Mrs Max* chant, Mrs Miles, Mrs Oowau, Mrs Foden, Misses S. Jonas, D. Chapman, J.Cramond, K* Cooper, Hassell, Priest, iintherford, K.andJ. Burnett, A. Mee, M Bilton, L. Holland,White, Sealey, Bussell (2), A. and M. McLean, M. Meason, and L. Gardner; Messrs M. J. Knubley, F. W. Wake, F. liiall, A. Hollow, and Chisholm. The successful candidates who were present were warmly applauded _ as they received their certificate*. The election of a committee was then taken, on the motion of Mr Knubley. He said that there was not much for them to do, still they might obooee those who could give their time to thedntfee. After a little time had been spent ia selection it was resolved, oh the motion of Mr Knubley —“That Mrs Jones, Mrs Merchant, Mrs Cowan, Miss McLean, the ven. Archdeacon Harper, and Mr Knubley (with leave to add to their number) bo the committee for the ensuing year.” The motion was ear* ried unanimously. On tbe motion of Mre Jones Archdeacon Harper was warmly thanked for being present that after* noon, and tbe Arobdeaoon cordially (hanked them for the honour they had paid him. Books were then distributed setting out the second course of leotnres, and those present entered on a general conversation of tho work for the coming session. The ladies and others present apparently took a deep and quiet interest in tbe work of the branch, and there ie every promise of the year they have now entered on being most aaooessfnl.
