(Bz TelißGbaph.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 2. The Collector of Customs at Auckland, Mr Thomas Hill, who has occupied the office for many years, retires from the service of the New Zealand Government on the 31st of March next on a pension. He has been for about forty years in the Department in various parts of the colony. Mr R. J. Lannauze, chief clerk in the Auckland Customs, has also received notice of his retire* ment by the Government on pension. The steeplechase horse Sentinel was eeri ously injured to-day whilst on its way to Hamilton by train, owing to a fire breaking out in the horsebox. The fire was discovered when the train arrived at Papotoitoi, arid it was than found that the animal bad been considerably burned about the legs and forequarters. The man who was run over by the tramway at Epsom last night, and died afterwards in the hospital, has been identified as a pensioner named Patrick Dunn. He was of eccentric habits, and had no settled place of abode. The first sheep fair of the season was held to-day by Messrs A. Buckland and Sons, at their Bemuera yards. The attendance was the largest seen at these fairs for some years. About twelve thousand sheep were sold. Prices were satisfactory, those for Lincoln ewes reaching 20s fid each, given for some bred by Mr Bobert flail, of One Tree Hill. £l2 each was paid for ram hoggets bred by Mr Baird, of Atahubu. At a meeting of the Auckland Presbytery to-night a motion was passed, expressing sorrow at the death of the late Mr Spurgeon, WELLINGTON. Feb. 2. The Takapuna, which leaves for Lyttelton at 3 o’clock to-morrow afternoon, will take the South Island portion of the San Francisco mail. The bags from Dunedin and intermediate stations will be despatched from Christchurch by express. A Liberal Association is in course of formation here. The report of the Commission to inquire into the charges against the" Rev. Mr Decastro, of the Public Trustee Office, is to the effect that his conduct had not unfitted him fo employment in the Civil Service, but that he -had better not return to the Public Trust Office. As Mr Decastro has completed the term qualifying him for a pension this report will entitle him to receive i*. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 2. The twenty-sixth annual meeting of the Christchurch Gas Company was held this afternoon. The chairman, Mr F. G. Wright, stated that during the year the business of the company had increased 7 per cent. The directors’ report shewed that the balance to credit of profit and loss account was £10,852 A dividend of 5 per cent, for the half-year, making 10 per cent, for the year, was declared.

At the Chicago Exhibition Committee today a report was presented that, as there is little probability of New Zealand exhibitors doing business in America, or any good .likely to arise therefrom, there was not sufficient inducement for them to exhibit. It is anticipated that good exhibits of products will be made. Mr J. J. Kinsey was recommended to the Government as Exhibition Commissioner for this district. DUNEDIN, Fbb. 2, The Hon. J, Q. Ward arrived in town to-day from the Bluff. About 200 tickets have been disposed of eo far fpr the banquet to the Governor on Saturday. , At a meeting of the Bowling Association 32 entries wore received for the rink tournament, which is somewhat below expectations. A serious coach accident near Lawrence is just reported. Several people were badly injured, but no particulars are to hand. Latbb. The coach accident near Lawrence was caused by the kingbolt breaking. The horses bolted with the forepart. James Mclntosh, the driver, was the only one seriously injured. Three of the passengers were severely shaken.
