PURCHASE OF RAILWAYS. Hobart, July 5. | JHon R. S. Bird, the Treasurer, has tabled a motion in the House of Assembly sanctioning the purchase of the Tasmanian main line of railway for £1,106,500 at per cent, in inscribed stock. THE AUSTRALIAN FORCES. Melbourne, July 5. It is proposed to increase the land forces of Victoria by two additional battalions, each on a peace footing of 500 men with a war strength of 1000 and by two battalions of rangers, each corps to be 1000 strong. It is suggested that the federal force on this basis would provide 12,000 rifles for Australian defence on a peace footing and double on a war footing, with artillery of 12 field guns.
