AUCKLAND, June 17.

News received from Port Albert states that Herbert M. Jackson, a settler of that district, has been killed by a gunshot. It is supposed that he was out shooting. The Piako County Council have decided to protest against the importation of stoats and weasels.

The American racing expert, Mr E. E. Merry, who has been purchasing horses in Australia, bought whilst passing through Auckland two brood mares, The Jilt and Welcome Katie.

NAPIER, June 17,

In giving judgment in the property tax case heard yesterday the Resident Magistrate held that Messrs Murray Roberts and Co. must pay the tax on tho sum of £25,000 in dispute, under section 17, sub-section 3, as the liability of the firm to the bank was only contingent on their drafts being discharged, and they could not have been sued for the amount on the Ist of October, 1888.

EBEFTON, June 17.

A largely attended public meeting, called by requisition and presided over by the County Chairman, was (held on Monday evening, to take steps to prevent auriferous lands falling into the hands of the Midland Railway Company. It is said that, despite the assurance of the Minister of Mines to the contrary, the company are letting land without the council being previously informed. A series of strong resolutions was passed, and is to be forwarded to the Government. The co-operation of the whole West Coast is to be invited in the matter.

WELLINGTON, May 17.

At a largely attended meeting of the Committee of the Wellington Agricultural and Pastoral Association to day, the annual show was fixed for the 23rd and 24th October. ’ The prize money was increased to £SOO, exclusive of special prizes. The annual report of the Wellington Woollen Company shows that the credit balance for the year, after writing off £2OOO from the machinery, plant, and properties account, and increasing the reserve account from £2143 Is lOd to £4OOO, amounts to £7370 2s 4d. The directors recommend the payment of an annual dividend of 8 per cent, (of which 4 per cent, for the first half year has already been distributed), which will absorb £954 3a fid, leaving a balance of £4415 18s lOd to be carried forward to the credit of next year’s account.

WESTPORT, June 17,

In the District Court to-day, the bankruptcy case of T. Lawrie was continued. The Court was occupied all day in hearing a motion to set aside the sale of a piano by bankrupt. 'J ho Judge found that there had been fraudulent preference, and ordered payment of the value of tho instrument to the Official Assignee. There ore similar motions for to-morrow. The court was crowded as the case is of much local interest.

DUNEDIN. June 17.

At a meeting of the Volunteer Officers’ Club to-night it was resolved to get up subscriptions in aid of the destitute survivors of the noble “ Six Hundred.” The bands are also going to take the matter up, and give a concert in aid of the object. At the adjourned meeting of those in favour of forming a new musical society, a constitution was adopted and office-bearers appointed, Mr John Roberts being appointed president, and Mr Towsey conductor. There are already more than 100 members, and practice is to be commenced in a fortnight.

As the tide will be unsuitable for the' Einmtaka early in the morning the Plucky with the launch in tow went down to meet the steamer at the Hoads, whore she is expected to arrive at about 1 a.m. The mails will be transhipped and brought up in time to allow of their being sent away by the trains in the morning.-
