TlMAEU—Tuesday, June 17. (Before 0. A. Wray, Esq., R.M.) A REFRACTORY BEAMAN. —Niccoljwas charged with wilfully disobeying the lawful orders of captain T. Cormack of the Ardmore, yesterday morning. Defendant said he was a “ Bbosan ” and did not understand English, “no savee ifnglis.” Mr White, who appeared for complainant, said he must be able to understand English or he would not be able to go to sea in an English ship. He must be able to understand orders.

Captain T. Cormack produced the articles, signed with a mark by defendant as A.B. on the ship. Yesterday morning defendant refused to go to work, and said be would do no more work on the ship, saying he could not agree with the rest. Defendant had come with the ship from Glasgow, and he had never shown any difficulty in understanding orders. He had a little quarrel with some of the others on Sunday morning, not, so far as witness knew, before that.

Defendant said he would do no more work.

The first mate stated the man refused to turn to on his ordering him to do so, and seemed quite jolly over it. He gave no reason for it. There had been some squabbling in the forecastle but not more than usual. Defendant had never complained of ill treatment by the rest of the crew.
