SPORTING.

TIMARU TROTTING CLUB. FIRST MEETING. Stewards : Messrs S. Parmenter, G. Stumbles, W. Tutton, J, Shaw, W. Collins, F. C. Watson, J. Egan, H. Geaney, E. Sullivan, D. Mahoney, E. Smith, J. Gibson. Judge—H. Gardner. Clerk of Scales—B. Smith, Starter—J. Meikle. Clerk of Course —M. Taylor. Timekeeper—E. Humphrey. Treasurer—D. Mahoney. Handicappcr-M. Taylor (Christchurch). The above meeting took place on the South Canterbury Athletic Club’s grounds this afternoon. The weather was fine, and the attenddance very good, this being satisfactory to the club. In fact, taking the meeting all through the success attending it was first rets evidence that the club’s efforts to cater for sport that has become very popular of late, were duly appreciated. We congratulate the club on this and are quite confident that if owners and the public support them as they should do, prizes of a most liberal nature will shortly be given. Coming now to the track it must bo admitted that thoughjit was not of the very best, still, with the limited time at disposal, it had

been made very good. It was well defined all round, and the straight wasjstrongly roped in so that a good view of all horses could be

got. For those of a speculative turn of mind there was a totalisator on the ground run by Messrs Mason and Roberts, through which a good sum was filtered. Mr M. Soannell had the general license booth, and did very well, and Mr Watts at the refreshment booth appeared to be fairly well patronised. The officials of the club worked very energetically, and the events were kept going well to time.

Being the first meeting the Hon. Sec. (Mr Collins) was kept going all the time, working hard, and was ably seconded by Mr E. Smith at the scales. In the box Mr Gardner had no difficulty in placing [the horses close finishes being rare. As clerk of the course Mr Martin Taylor looked quite gay. end he kept the riders up to lime sharply, Mr Meikle is such an old knight with the flag, that to individualise him is almost unnecessary, and Mr Humphrey made a very efficient time keeper. Sport was fairly good throughout, and kept going lively. The Garrison Band arrived during the afternoon and played on the oval, their music adding to the pleasure of the day. Up to the hour of going to press details are as follow

Maiden, of 15 sovs; second horse 3 sovs; about 2 miles.

First Heat,

29 Mr Hendersons (ns) b g Nigger, aged (Robinson) 1 19 Mr Cairns’ Apprentice (Burke) 2 3 Mr Smith’s (ns) Misfortune, 4 years (Enott) 3 3 Alice, 1 Signet, 8 Anaconda, and 2 Doctor Chase, also started. At the fall of the flag Nigger went away strong, but breaking at the back, Apprentice had the lead for a furlong or two, when Nigger again resumed command, and not being troubled trotted well, and was landed nn easy winner by three or four lengths. Misfortune was an indifferent third; the others finishing fairly close up. Time—Grain. 48sec. Dividend - £2.

A protest was entered by Burke, for Nigger crossing his front at the corner leading off the straight on the first time round. The stewards met, and after bearing evidence decided to dismiss the protest.

Second Heat. 6 Mr Edwards’ b g Dick Turpin (Owner) 1 1 Mr Hoakey’s (ns) b m May (Whittaker) 2 2 Mr Rodgers’b gLarry (Anderson) ... 8 1 Nellie also started.

May bad the lead past the stand the first time and was then passed by Dick Turpin, who went away strong, and . won by 12 lengths. Larry finished close to May.

Time— 7min fisecs. Dividend —£112 s. Handicap Time Tbot, of 20 sovs., second 3 eovs.; about two miles. 69 Mr H. Q-, Pitt’s Imp, 27 see, (Owner) 1 65 Mr G. Grant’s Silver Prince, 34 sec, (Owner) 2 8 Mr G. Bourke’a Banshee, 24 sec, (Owner) 3 3 Glancef (47sec), 3 Miss Cave (37sec), 4 Mountjoy (37seo), 0 Milkmaid (34seo), 1 Krippel (34sec), 2 Muckross (32sec), 21 Dexter (30sec) also went out. The limit horse led for a couple of laps, when Miss Cave went up, broke at the corner, came again and joined Glancer, the other noticeable feature at the time being the fast way Silver Prince and the Imp were coming through their field. At last Silver Prince got right through and going fast kept command for some time. Then Imp also got clear of her immediate attendants, and running up to Silver Prince lay second quietly for a time. The critical period arriving the Imp was trotted to the front, and a fine race resulted in a three lengths win for her; Banshee being a poor third; the others just rounding the turn for home. Time—6min 20sec. Totalisator—£2 Bs. Final Heat of the Maiden.

83 Nigger 1 31 Dick Turpin 2 10 Apprentice 3 3 Misfortune, 1 Larry and 0 May also started.

The result was never in doubt, as on the opening running, Nigger bad the race in hand. He shaped rather indifferently at the start, but once in his stride he sailed away and won by about four lengths; a bad third.

Time 6min 43sec, Totalizator £1 7s. Novel Trot, of 15 sots ; about 2 miles. 39 Mr Prices Willy Reilly (20sec) ... 1 74 Mr Lambert’s Krippel (scr) 2 27 Drift (20aec) and 7 Rosie (20sec), also started.

The race was quite as its name implies, being a novelty from start to finish. Willy Reilly kept in the lead, every time Drift going up to him he broke. Coming to the homo turn, the pair were close together, but the bridle coming off Drift, he was hopelessly out of it, W illy trotting in an easy winner.

Time— fimins. 49zeo, Tolahsator-£3 7d.

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 31

The tracks at Biccarton are now very hard, and training infirm-legged horses is a matter of great difficulty. This morning Alsace galloped a mile and a half in good style. British Lion and Cynieca covered the same distance at three quarter pace. Masthead made one circuit, finishing at top pace and afterwards walked very lame, the mare’s knee giving way again. Whisper traversed the Cup distance in capital form, pulling up sound and well. Wakatipu went a mile and a half fast, a moderate gallop. Sultan after going at three-quarter pace was joined by Ruby and taken along fast another mile. The Cup horse, though in evident pain, got over the ground fast but afterwards walked very lame. It is very doubtful if he will get to the poet.
