TIMARU NAVAL ARTILLERY.
COMPETITION FOR CHALLENGE BELT.
.This annual event was fired on the Timaru range on Wednesday morning, when 12 members of thol 1 . N. A. turned up to compete for the Belt which is given by the corps to the highest scorer, who holds it for the next 12 months. Petty Officer Btapley. proved to be the winner, with a score of 70. Gunner
Waugh, last year’s “ champion,” broke down at , the longer ranges and spoilt his chance for this year. A strong easterly wind was blowing, which increased in force .when the 500 yards range was taken, and the competitors were obliged to aim many feet left of the target, As there is no background to the large target, good shooting is a matter of impossibility in a strong wind from the left. The conditions were, 5 shots at 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards, Wimbledon targets and scoring. The winner last year scored 78. The following are the scores :
