AUCKLAND, June 11

In the case of Louis Paget, accused of murdering the woman Mary Ann Wilson at Archill, the Grand Jury at the Supreme Court threw out the bill, but returned a true bill against the prisoner on a charge of manslaughter. James Wilkinson was found guilty of stealing five books from the Public Library, Sentence was deferred, as four other charges of a similar character are to be brought against him. The Colonial Sugar Company’s No. 1 and No. 3 sugars have been advanced in price £3, and No. 3 £llos.

At a meeting of tho Harbour Board to-day the foreman of works stated that tho pumps at the Calliope Dock had been considerably damaged. The crossheads had been broken, three pillars shifted, and a great many nuts and bolts had been broken, besides other injuries of which he gave technical details He estimated that the repairs would cost about £IOOO. Mr Errington in a report estimated the cost of repairs at £4OOO. Mr Niccol, the chairman, said that it appeared that the damage had been originally caused by a sudden shock to the machinery. Mr Ormond addressed his constituents this evening. He devoted the first part of his speech to an elaborate and rather warm attack on the Opposition fer their attitude with respect to tho Customs Tariff Bill. Ho charged them with supporting the proposals to alienate Government supporters, and then making overtures to the malcontents to form a combination to turn the Ministry out. H e expressed general approval of the actions of the Ministry in other respects, and intimated that he would support a modified Hare system and the other proposals of the Government, but woull strongly oppose any amendment in the Education Act on tho lines of Mr Fisher’s Bill. He was very warmly received, but at the close a vote of thanks only was proposed. The decisions of the Board of Property Tax Reviewers have added £130,000 to the assessor’s valuations of Patangata County. Altogether the increase over the original valuations in Hawke’s Bay Provincial District is over half a million. It transpired at the Patangata court that the increased valuations were based on a minimum equal to £2 per sbeop carried, with additions to properties containing much ploughable land or having exceptional facilities of access. In some cases the valuations were equal to £4 per sheep. The runholders complain that they cannot make 5 per cent on these valuations.

A man named Patrick Dillon was brought up on remand on a charge of rape on two girls of tender years, aged 4 and 7 years respectively. Tho case was heard with closed doors- Prisoner reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next sitting of tho Supreme Court.

WELLINGTON, June 11

In consequence of the rise in sugar, tho local retailero have increased the price id per lb on all qualities. Tho Hutt County Council have decided to co-operate with the Pahiatua County Council in endeavouring to obtain daring tho coming session of Parliament an amendment of the Land Act, which regulates the expenditure of thirds, in tho direction of allowing thirds to be used to pay interest on loans.

At a meeting of Volunteers, officers, and others to night, a committee of senior officers, with whom are associated tho mayor and councillors, was appointed to raise funds for an Exhibition Kille Meeting. A committee was appointed to go over tho programme, and it was dccilod that a meeting should bo hold about the middle of January. Mr John Huberts, President of the Exhibition Commissioners, loaves on Friday for Auckland, where ho will remain for some days with a view of endeavouring to secure tho co-oper-ation of that district for tho Exhibition

A man named Qoorgo Wilson, alias Frederick Barnes Ward, was arrested bore lo-

day by Detective Madders for picking pockets in Melbourne. Prisoner admits that he came over by the Te Anau yesterday, but says that his name is H. 0. Stirling. It has since been ascertained that he has taken the name of a saloon passenger who has gone on to Dunedin. Wilson came over in the saloon, but yesterday victimised a hotelkeeper for the price of a dinner. He answers the description of the man who is wanted.
